Phases
Optional at Phase 2 and Advanced Academy

Business Studies at Newquay Tretherras
The Business department is part of the Applied Learning department within Newquay Tretherras, and offers students the opportunity to study Business Studies at both Phase 2 and Advanced Academy, in a variety of ways. All staff involved in the delivery of Business share the ethos that contextualisation is the key within the subject, and as such, guide students through the course, relating subject matter to real business events and organisations.

Students are offered every chance to succeed at Phase 2, with Booster sessions running once a week designed to strengthen the students understanding, and build on what is covered during lesson time. This continues into Advanced Academy where further weighting is put on independent research for specific units, and staff guide students through the process of developing their understanding of the key Business concepts required for their exams.

GCSE Curriculum
Students follow the Edexcel GCSE specification at Phase 2, completing two Units of work in Year 1, and one Unit of work in Year 2. Initially focusing on basic Business concepts at the start of Year 10, students work towards completing their Unit 1 work which is assessed through a multiple choice exam paper. From this, they move on to complete their Unit 2 work, a piece of coursework focusing on a small local business of their choosing. In Year 11 we look to develop students understanding of the topics we have covered through Unit 3. This is assessed through a longer word exam paper, something which students are guided towards fully through lesson time and booster sessions. Students sit both exams at the end of Year 11 in the exam period.

A Level Curriculum
Students have two options for studying Business at Advanced Academy – AQA AS/A2 Business Studies, and BTEC Level 3 Business.
