Exceptional performances from Newquay Tretherras Maths Students win National Awards

Just before Easter, Year 8 students Alex Mousley and Sam Millington were entered for the National Mathematics Cayley Olympiad. The competition is a 2 hour exam with just six extremely challenging questions. Full written solutions, including mathematical reasons as to why calculation methods are correct, are required.

Sam received a Merit for an outstanding score and Alex has received a medal, coming 12th in the country for his age group.

Alex, who hopes to pursue a career in computer programming commented, ’I was really stunned by the result and my ranking! I wanted to improve my score since the last competition but this was really a surprise!”

Director of Mathematics at Newquay Tretherras, Ms Rose Roelofse commented, “We are delighted that our students have been invited to such prestigious competitions. Sam and Alex have achieved phenomenal results that both boys should be extremely proud of. I would also like to congratulate their Maths teacher, Mr Jonathan Haywood, for supporting all the students who took part in all the competitions.”

The Newquay Tretherras Maths department already boasts fantastic results with 77% of students achieving A*-C at GCSE, 100% A*-C in Further Maths GCSE and 100% pass rate at A Level in 2015. Both students received A*’s in their Higher GCSE PPE’s last term and are expected to get A*’s in their real GCSE this summer.
