Health Week

Last week, Newquay Tretherras promoted the importance of good nutrition and exercise during their annual Health Week.

The school offered a variety of opportunities to encourage students and teachers to consider how they could become healthier individuals.

Assemblies on sun safety and Nike’s ‘5 Years More’ campaign took place, junior students participated in a ‘Wake Up, Shake Up’ dance session and registration periods were used to raise student’s awareness of current health topics.

One of the biggest events saw Year 7’s participate in a ‘Row to Rio’ challenge, in which students were challenged to collectively row the distance from Newquay to Rio De Janiero, the venue of next year’s Olympic Games. The event was also used to raise funds to support the development of the school fitness suite.

A healthy eating cookery workshop with Sanjay Kumar, chef at The Headland Hotel, was held, during which he taught a small group of students how to make ‘Superfood Wraps’ with fresh, nutritious ingredients.

DSC_0635Miss Mollie Leverton, Teacher of PE and co-organiser of the event said, “Health week was a fantastic success in getting students and staff to take time out to look at their lifestyles and identify ways that they can make their lives healthier. Students really got on board with the events and much fun was had by all.”

Over the course of the week, Newquay Sports Centre and Heron Tennis joined Tretherras in their efforts to encourage a healthy lifestyle by offering discounted facility hire to students and their families.
