Newquay Tretherras Jazz Band Ensemble Play at the Royal Albert Hall

Members of the Newquay Tretherras Jazz band, including choir singers, performed in the School Proms at the Royal Albert hall on Wednesday the 13th November.

The 35 Tretherras musicians, who were part of the Co-Create Cornwall Massed Ensemble, joined a group of 600 students from across Cornwall to perform on stage at one of the world’s most iconic venues at the Music for Youth Schools Prom concerts.

Funded by Vivendi Create Joy, Co-Create Cornwall, the massed ensemble composition project, involved young people in Cornwall in the co-creation of a new work. It was led by professional Music For Youth artists, composer and multi-instrumentalist Joe Broughton; percussionist and workshop leader, Tom Chapman; violinist and workshop leader, Paloma Trigas and in partnership with multiple local music leaders.

The project sought to recruit young people from the length and breadth of Cornwall, reaching out to musical students who experience rural isolation in its most extreme form, and to represent the diverse and rich musical landscape of the UK’s most southern point.

Starting in May this year, MFY engaged a team of artists to work in the region, delivering workshops and developing new music together – all in partnership with local teachers and musicians so as to leave a lasting legacy. The result was  Joe Broughton’s piece One and All – Onen hag Oll. The project culminated with their massed performance at the Schools Prom in the Royal Albert Hall.

Head of Music Mr Jono Knight commented, “It was better than I could possibly imagine. It was very professional, 600 musicians all wired for sound, yet everyone was so relaxed, friendly and the atmosphere was unbelievably magical. The Tretherras student were a fanatic example of talented young musicians and they played to perfection.”

The magical evening followed in the tradition of the Last Night of The Proms with performers and audiences waving flags.

Mr Knight added, “ We were so excited when the compare of the evening spotted our 8 ft Tretherras Cornish flag. The Co-Create composer Joe Broughton became an adopted Cornishman, and joined in with us holding our flag and waving it around.”

Storm Boden Year 9 student at Newquay Tretherras commented, “It was amazing. Just getting up on stage was something really special. It was so fantastic and I will always remember all the friendly people we worked with.”
