Contextual Information for Higher Education Providers

The information below is designed to supplement the UCAS reference and present Higher Education Providers with a student’s school context as part of the admissions process.

OverviewNewquay Tretherras School is a Co-educational all ability comprehensive academy of 1750 students, aged 11-18, including over 220 in a co-educational Sixth Form.

The school draws students from the 2nd highest ward of deprivation in Cornwall and is currently in the 10% most deprived areas of the country. Despite this, our students achieve consistently outstanding exam results. At A Level the pass rate over the last four years is above 99% with an average of over 70 per cent obtaining A*- B in the last seven years (2022– 69%). This year 30% applied and successfully gained places at Russell Group Universities, with up to 74% of our Year 13’s taking up places in Higher Education each year.

Our Sixth Form curriculum is based around a strong academic core. The standard offering is 3 A Level subjects with EPQ offered in Year 13. 33% of students study a vocational Level 3 subjects. A small cohort of around 15% of our most exceptional students, based on performance at GCSE, are permitted to study 4 A Level subjects.

The EPQ allows our students to pursue an investigation in real depth, becoming expert in their chosen subject and demonstrating their research and presentation skills in ways that are ever more in demand by employers and Universities.

Determining Predicted GradesPre-Public Exams (1 in Year 12 and 1 in Year 13) and Midterms (3 across each year) are used in determining students’ predicted grades in A Level and vocational subject. This allows us to identify how the students are progressing throughout the course and, alongside practical and coursework’s elements of courses, give us an accurate predicted grade.
