The Final of The Great Tretherras Bake of 2016 was held on January 12th, 2017.
The first rounds were held back in November 2016 and run as an after-school activity, available to all Year 7-11 students, who had a 90 minute session to create their Signature Bake.
Students from Year 9, 10 & 11 were asked to bake a savoury pastry roll product or a sweet pie or turnover. Year 8 were given a choice of cupcakes or scones and year 7 students had the task of making flapjacks or biscuits.
After each round, the Star Bakers went on to compete in the Final where they were given 120 minutes to create their Showstopper.
The successful Star Bakers were: Year 10- Jessica Shrigley and Saffie Dixon, Year 9- Jai Holmes and in Year 8 Jenna Bailey and Elsie Nesbitt. The competition was so fierce in Year 7 that 3 students were put through to the final, Lowen Mears-Ollerenshaw, Ellen Paice-Phillips and Aeryn Code.
The judges, standing in for Mr Hollywood and Ms Berry who were unavailable for these sessions, were impressed with the high standard of baking and the confidence of the students throughout. Creativity was shown in the selection of dishes and students presented their bakes really well.
The Final was really impressive. The joint Winners were Ellen with a gorgeous Chocolate Orange Cake and Lowen with his Profiterole stack with Glitter Chocolate Shards. Jenna was Highly Commended for her innovative twist on a traditional cream tea. She created a Teapot Shaped Earl Grey Sponge Cake, with a jam and cream filling. The winning students each received a Baking Set in assemblies this week.
House points were awarded to all competitors, with extra points for Star Bakers and the winners. Ellen and Lowen gained House Points for Lizard with Jenna achieving points for Pendeen.
Bake off Judge and Teacher of Design Technology Miss D Maunder commented, ‘I would like to thank all those who participated and made it such a difficult competition to judge, and to the DT staff for helping me to run the competition.
