After great success and popularity last year, Newquay Tretherras is once again holding their student cooking competition, NT Chef.
The first Year 7 heat was held last Wednesday and saw four students cooking a dish of their choice, which were then judged by a panel of teachers.
Student Mia Mills cleverly combined a stack of pancakes with toffee sauce, bananas and fresh strawberries – topped off with a luxurious chocolate sauce.
Merryn Mills combined some wonderful flavours with her herb crusted cod, potato hash and seasonal vegetables.
Sophie Cooper created an ambitious seafood pasta dish with muscles, prawns, and squid, topped off with pan-fried langoustine.
Judges deliberated for some time before putting Merryn Mills and a very pleased Sophie Cooper through to the next round.
The following day, all competitors gathered for a Masterclass with Phil Oakes of Cornwall College Redruth, who cooked a fish dish for the group, as well as giving them tips to improve their own culinary skills.
Mr David Nicholls, Tretherras teacher and organiser of NT Chef said, “This year is already looking to be bigger and better than last years, with a total of 7 year group heats, as well as a number of master classes from professional chefs.”
He continued, “It’s just amazing to see the students getting the opportunity to prepare food that they are truly passionate about, and the standard of food in the first round was simply incredible!”
