A group of Year 11 top scientists from Newquay Tretherras were recently given first-hand experience in a medical setting when they spent the day at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

The day, led by top surgeons, gave the students opportunities to examine fractures, sample surgical solutions to severe injuries and practice scrub up procedures for surgery.

First year medical students were also on hand to offer the aspiring scientists guidance of the academic and application demands of getting into a career in medicine.

One year 11 student said, “The day has been very valuable to me as it has confirmed my interest in medicine and motivated me to succeed.”

Mr Greg Carter, Teacher of Science at Tretherras commented, “The students gained a great deal from the day and have come away with a huge sense of excitement in regards to their next steps.”
