Charlotte Cayton Smith became the U20 national indoor 800m champion on saturday in Sheffield. Rank 1 in the country this year, the pressure was on Charlotte to gain the title. Charlotte was confident from the outset, setting the early pace and stretching the field. A quick last lap gave a Charlotte a very well deserved victory and national title.
On Sunday, Charlotte trimmed a massive 1.7 seconds off her 2:09.52 indoor 800m time set at the Cardiff Met Grand Prix in mid-January. This time, the Tretherras student ran a 2:07.80, again in Cardiff, hitting the top step of the podium once again in the Under-20 category.
Charlotte remains ranked number one in the United Kingdom’s U-20W 800m – nearly three seconds clear of the number two ranking.
With an indoor time usually about two seconds slower than an outdoor time, Charlotte is on track to beat her 2013 outdoor personal best (PB) of 2:07.68 and put herself on a solid footing for the 2014 outdoor season which beings in April.
Charlotte (below) said: “I was surprised to run so close to my outdoor PB. I am pleased to be hanging on to the number one UK spot for my age group for the time being. I am delighted that that time puts me 14th on the all-time indoor U-20 rankings – five of those times were set in the 70s and 80s; before I was born!”
