Tretherras Students Take Part In Regional Green Power Race

On Thursday 21st June a team of ten Engineering students took part in the regional Green Power F24 Electric Car race at Predannack Airfield. The competition is to build a car powered by two standard 12 volt batteries and motor. The race winner is the car which covers the longest distance in ninety minutes on one set of batteries.

The students from Year 8 & 9 had spent many hours designing, building and testing their two electric vehicles. Woody is a custom built plywood car and Eric (Electric Racing Inspires Children) is a steel kit car with foam body kit.
Conditions on the day were challenging with a very strong wind and bumpy surface.

The cars were very well driven by six different drivers and performed better than expected. Woody covered a total of 54 miles and came 11th place after grinding to a halt after 84 minutes. Eric covered 53 miles in total and was the 5th fasted kit car entered. The students were proud of their engineering skills as their thorough preparation resulted in no breakdowns or problems.

The students really enjoyed the racing experience and are already planning a new improved vehicle to compete next year. We are looking for community support to help design and manufacture a light weight composite body shell with low drag. Please contact Mr Vittle if you are able to assist in this challenge.
