Discover Fortunes Training Delivered To NT Students

On Wednesday 2nd of May, Newquay Tretherras hosted members of the Personal Finance Society, who delivered their Discover Fortunes Training to a selection of students from years 10, 11, 12 and 13. Designed to
introduce students to the idea of personal financial management and to give them an overview of the different roles and opportunities available within the finance sector, students were given the opportunity to choose investments for a selection of customers
based on their own individual requirements.

Throughout the session, students were presented with a selection of scenarios from characters devised by the Personal Finance Society, who presented students with an insight into their likes, dislikes, and aspirations
for life – students were then asked to decide on the type of investor they were dealing with, before deciding how to split their investments between a selection of choices – from savings through to pensions and investments.

The session was designed to give students an insight into the finance industry, and show them that it’s a dynamic and continually evolving industry, rather than the boring area of work it’s often billed as. Year
11 student Molly said “It was very engaging and the team work activity has definitely helped me boost my skills in business”, whilst fellow Year 11 student Will said “It was extremely useful, a great experience, and a lot of fun”.

Lead Teacher of Applied Learning and Business, Dave Nicholls, said “This was an excellent opportunity for students to work alongside professionals from a much misunderstood industry in order to gain an insight
into potential job roles, but also to find out the various job opportunities which are out there which they could pursue. It was really pleasing to see students so engaged in the activities, and to listen to their questions as the session came to a close,
which clearly reflected the interest which the session had brought out in them all – big thanks to Kate, Ged, George and Sarah for giving up their time and giving our students such an informative session”.
