The inaugural Newquay Tretherras STEM careers day was held at the school on Friday 6th July.
The whole of Year 7 spent the day learning about a number of exciting and innovative careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and the importance of these subjects in their everyday lives.
A number of STEM ambassador volunteers from local industries gave up their time to showcase their STEM sectors and jobs to the Year 7 students. Students carried out a number of hands on activities including making catapults, learning about space exploration, army communication systems, 3D printing and chemical engineering.
Mr Andrew Saundry, Director of Science and STEM at Newquay Tretherras explained, “It’s been great to be able to run an event for nearly 300 students to show the relevance of STEM in their lives and also to learn about possible future careers and opportunities within the STEM industries. The Newquay Tretherras students have had a really fun day but have also learned a huge amount. We really appreciate the input from the local community which has given the students the chance to see opportunities for them both in Cornwall and further afield’.
Mr Saundry added ‘The day would not have been possible without the support of many staff and especially the STEM ambassador program and the volunteers themselves. I would like to thank everyone for their hard work and contributions which have made this such an inspirational day for our students’.
