A LEVEL RESULTS DAY 2021

Newquay Tretherras’ Sixth Form continues its tradition of achieving the highest grades, with students successfully gaining places at Oxford and Cambridge, medical schools and prestigious Russell Group universities this year.

As you know, exams this year were cancelled by the government in January and replaced by a process of Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs) in order to grade students. The TAGs we submitted were in line with our Centre Policy, which was approved by the exam boards, and we also had to send samples of our evidence and grading to the exam boards as part of a national quality assurance check. We were delighted that, as a result, our TAGs were approved without exception.

Once again, our students have shown their resilience and determination throughout another COVID-disrupted year. NT6 students have once again achieved an amazing set of results, with 77% of students achieving A* -B grades at A Level and 93% of Vocational students achieving Distinction Star/ Distinction grades.

This special year group continually outperformed previous cohorts at NT6 at every data entry point and a huge credit needs to be bestowed on these individuals, given their experience over the last 2 years. We have now achieved 5 consecutive years of successful Oxford and Cambridge applications and 7 years of Medical applications.

Individual student performances were high across all subjects, however there were several exceptional A level performances: Sam Millington achieved 6 A*s an amazing achievement for a remarkably gifted student, and he has gained a place at Oxford to read Physics. Max Hudson has gained a place at Oxford to read Engineering after achieving 3 A*s. Cameron Frazer achieved 3 A*s & 1 A and has secured a place at Durham to read History. Olivia Thomas achieved 3 A*s and has gained a place at Cardiff to read Mathematics. Joel Mitchell achieved 2A*s & 2 A’s and has successfully secured a place at the Dyson Institute of Engineering & Technology. Emily Booth, Kate Harrison, Mikey Kessell and Daisy Slater are all set to read Medicine at Exeter whilst Lucy Cooke Davies is to read Medicine at Anglia Ruskin.

Level 3 Vocational courses have also produced some amazing performances with the following all achieving 3 Distinction stars. Elijah Ashmore (Sports Science) has gained a place at Exeter to study Sports Science, Kai Bishop (Sports Science) has gained a place at London South Bank to study Sports Science, Liam Bendall has successfully gained a place in the Armed Forces. Phoebe Dennis (Health & Social Care) has gained a place at Plymouth Marjons to study Speech & Language Therapy, Lauren Moorse (Applied Science) has gained a place at Middlesex to study Veterinary Nursing, Jade Norton (Sports Science) has gained a place at Cardiff Met to study Sports Conditioning, Rehabilitation & Massage, Ruby Pender (Health & Social Care) has gained a place to study Nursing at Plymouth, Ellie Wason (Applied Science) has gained a place to study Veterinary Nursing at Harper Adams.

Head of 6th form, Andy Booth commented, “We are incredibly proud of our students and their achievements, particularly this year. They have shown fantastic resolve and resilience, and they fully deserve their results”.

Assistant Headteacher James Hammersley said, “Once again, our students have proved to themselves and others that Newquay students are capable of achieving outstanding results that compare to the best schools nationally. Many congratulations to all of our students on these fantastic grades.“

Executive Headteacher Samantha Fairbairn commented, “For the second year running, Tretherras staff have worked ethically and with great integrity to follow the advice and guidance from Ofqual in awarding accurate teacher assessed grades. Staff have worked incredibly hard to assess, mark and moderate student assessments and I would like to pay tribute to their commitment and dedication throughout the pandemic.

On behalf of the staff of Tretherras, I would like to congratulate Year 13 on their great personal achievements. Many of our students have achieved fantastic results and developed amazing skills during their time in the sixth form, which will open doors to their futures. We are proud of every single one of them and wish them every success for the future. We would like to thank them for their optimism and positivity during incredibly challenging times and for being great role models and advocates for Tretherras within our community.

I would like to thank our parents and carers for their fantastic support during the pandemic and also congratulate you on the wonderful achievements of your sons and daughters as they begin the next exciting chapters of their lives”.
