Newquay Tretherras student, Gabriella Ryder, has been successfully elected Youth MP for Mid-Cornwall.
Gabriella who is in Year 9, will have the opportunity to represent the views and opinions of young people from Cornwall, sharing these views with other Youth MP’s from all over the UK, and campaigning for a better future for them.
Whilst most of the role will be conducted locally, Gabriella will also have the opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament each year, to discuss key topics which are important to young people.
Gabriella’s electoral campaign focused on Youth Voice, giving young people a voice, allowing them to be heard, and having their views shared. From the first term in office, Gabriella will work on this and hopes to create a platform in school for more to learn about youth Voice.
Gabriella commented, ‘I want to make Youth Voice more known to young people and give them the confidence to speak out. It is important that they know their rights, when to speak and how to say it’.
Head of Year 9, Mr Nicholls, says: “I am so proud of Gabriella in achieving this role – her campaign video showed how truly passionate she is about helping young people, and I am sure that she will not only thoroughly enjoy the role of MYP, but will really make a difference to the future of young people through sharing their views, and being a voice for them. A massive well done to Gabriella and I can’t wait to see how you get on in this role!!”
Gabriella is going to be hitting the ground running and getting to work straight away on her manifesto, working with her sub-team at County Hall on the 30th of April.
