Tutor time reading –the READ Project
At Tretherras we believe that reading for pleasure and reading for progress are key to a student’s success in school and beyond. The Read Project is designed to introduce students to a range of excellent texts, both fiction and non-fiction, that will foster their love for reading. The books chosen cover many genres, including traditional and modern classics, and have been written by some of Britain’s best loved and award-winning authors.
The programme has the following key principles that are based on the latest research into reading strategies:
- There are three titles allocated to each year group. A student joining in Year 7 should have read 12 books by the end of year 10.
- Reading takes place during registration/tutor time (lesson one), two days a week, lasting approximately 25-30 minutes.
- The tutor always reads to the students. This means that students have access to texts which they may have been prevented from attempting due to concerns about their accessibility. Tutors are able to model key aspects of reading, such as pace, pausing, tone and expression.
- All students have a copy of the text and are expected to follow the reading, line by line. Bookmarks are provided with each title, and students may retain them if they wish to build a record of their reading experience.
We encourage you to discuss with your child what is being read in tutor time.
