MFL – French & Spanish

For the current programme of study in phase one in both year 7 and year 8 the majority of students take both French and Spanish with just one group studying French only, with their additional time being given to literacy support lessons.

Year’s 7 and 8 are used to develop a foundation level in Languages focusing on the key skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Current topics of study include: Basic personal information, talking about family and friends, leisure time activities, school, where I live and technology. A broad range of vocabulary and an introduction to grammar are covered within these themes. In addition, there is a focus on cultural elements of the subject in lessons and through research relating to French and Spanish speaking countries.

In year 9 students choose one language and currently begin a 3 year programme of study building towards GCSE though this is an optional choice in year 10 and 11. Students are given the opportunity to build upon the skills and themes studied in phase one.

From September all students in phase one will study just one language and will be given a choice of French or Spanish.
