Primary Commonwealth Sports Day 2018

On Thursday 14th June close to 1000 Infant, Junior and Primary pupils descended on sporting venues across Newquay for the biannual festival celebrating the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

With a focus on participation, pupils represented their schools in a huge range of sports from tag rugby to athletics and lawn bowls to archery. The event which is co-ordinated by Newquay Tretherras and Treviglas Community College through the Newquay Sports Partnership also saw leaders from the two Secondary Schools supporting younger students in each of the activities. A number of community organisations also supported the event in what was truly a celebration of sport by schools in the town and surrounding area.

Sean Wells, Community Sports Co-ordinator at Treviglas commented “The day went really well, Newquay schools children working together in teams and developing skills in so many areas, I would especially like to thanks our Sports leaders, who without their help, this amazing event would not be able to take place”.

Tommy Year 7 Sports leader said ”I was a competitor at the last Olympic games two years ago and it was great fun to take part in the festival as a leader, the ball playing ability of the basketball players really came on during the day”.

John Scott, Newquay Tretherras Sports Leadership and Transition Co-ordinator was equally impressed by the commitment and ability on show at Newquay Tretherras, Newquay Sports Centre, Waterworld and the Heron. “It was clear to see the enjoyment of everyone who took part from the pupils to our fantastic leaders, teachers and supporting adults everyone had a great day. It was great to see so many young people involved in sport and I am already looking forward to the next one”.

Newquay Tretherras leaders were also equally impressed with the performance of Primary pupils with Josh a Year 9 student who supported the tag rugby saying, “Well done to all the pupils today, I really enjoyed the opportunity to help them improve their skills and they certainly taught me a trick or two!”.

The Newquay Sports Network would like to congratulate everyone who took part. All of the pupils had a fantastic day and were ably supported by young leaders from Newquay Tretherras and Treviglas. The NSN would also like to thank all of the individuals and clubs from the local community who gave their time to support the event. We look forward to the next one in 2020!
